Retreats

Mount Carmel Retreat Centre, on the outskirts of Sydney, NSW, has been a ministry of the Discalced Carmelites since 1964. Over the past almost 40 years, many thousands of people have discovered at Mt Carmel a place a refuge and beauty, and deep spirituality. "The property is stunningly and peacefully beautiful, especially the rolling hills, the birds, the water and the trees. It is close to Sydney and yet a million miles away. I was warmly welcomed and felt immediately at home."

Parishes

The Australian Carmelites are present in two parishes, one in the Archdiocese of Perth, at Morley, and one in South-West Sydney, at Varroville, in the Diocese of Wollongong. For more information on the presence and ministry offered by our Parishes, click here.

Youth (YCG)

There are small groups of Young Carmelites that meet in Sydney and Brisbane, known as the YCG. The Sydney group comprises committed young Catholics that meets once a month at the Discalced Carmelite Monastery, Varroville. Our aims are very simple. We hope to deepen our faith in Jesus—who we can know through prayer—through love of Jesus Christ and his Church, thereby placing ourselves at the service of God. This demands a serious desire to give ourselves to Jesus who invites us to know Him through scripture, the truths of the faith, and most of all through an intimate personal relationship. Carmel Print

The Carmelite Nuns at Varroville have begun a new publishing venture, taking over the publication of Peoplespeak, a gospel-based Sunday bulletin cover. Previously published by Teresa Pirola of Story Source, the Nuns bring many talents to the new ministry, including many years experience in desktop publishing and computer related design. The work of Carmel Print provides a supplement to their existing work in Carmel Colour. [Read more about Carmel Print & PeopleSpeak]

Vocations

A Carmelite is someone who has been called by the Holy Spirit to seek the face of the living God and hear his word deep within. He seeks by a life of contemplative prayer to enter into communion with God the Father, through Christ his Son in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is just this commitment to prayer that makes a Carmelite. His whole life flows from that source.[Read more about Vocation as a Friar]
