THE ASSOCIATION OF OUR LADY OF THE SOUTHERN CROSS

EVENTS LEADING UP TO OFFICIAL APPROVAL

1995

A Meeting was held at Mount Carmel Retreat House from 5 – 7 February. The Prioress and a Delegate from each of the Monasteries in this Region met with Father General Camilo Maccise OCD to consider the establishment of an Association of Carmels. A Preparatory Committee was commissioned to work on Statutes for the proposed Association.

The Preparatory Committee met at Ormiston Carmel from 20 – 24 May, and drew up revised Statutes.
28 November was the final date for each Community’s deliberative vote to join the association.
Copies of the Statutes were sent to Rome

1996

Official Approval was given by CICLSAL on March 31.
The Approved Statutes were received on April 24.

THE PURPOSE OF THE ASSOCIATION

“The purpose of the Association is to be an ecclesial expression of the unity in Christ of the member-Monasteries and a means to preserve and further communion within the Teresian Carmelite vocation at the service of the Church. It fulfils this purpose by:

  1. fostering fidelity to the Teresian charism and the genuine spirit of the contemplative life in accordance with our Rule and Constitutions;
  2. promoting understanding, trust and friendship between the member-Monasteries and among all Carmelite Monasteries;
  3. providing a means of communication between the member-Monasteries for the exchange of information and experience concerning the Teresian way of life in the context of our times and particular cultures;
  4. helping the member-Monasteries develop an integrated and effective formation process, including both initial and ongoing formation.
  5. facilitating mutual assistance in the form of financial help, personnel, material resources etc. Among the member-Monasteries;
  6. enabling effective communication with the Holy See, the central authority of the Order and other appropriate ecclesial bodies.”
