Discalced Carmelite Studium Library

Profile of the Library

The Discalced Carmelite Studium Library, Box Hill, is a library of the Australian Regional Vicariate of the Discalced Carmelite Friars, and an affiliated library of Yarra Theological Union. The Library is privately owned and funded by the Discalced Carmelites. The Library is administered by the Prior, Fr. Des Williamson OCD, assisted by a part-time librarian Mrs Siobhan Foster B.A., B.Theol., Dip.Lib.

Description of the Collection

The library is primarily for the use of the Discalced Carmelite Friars and students. The collection, therefore, centres on Carmelite spirituality, the writings of St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux and other Carmelite saints.

Among the strengths of the theological collection are the works and critical studies of some major systematic theologians e.g. Karl Rahner, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Bernard Lonergan and Edward Schillebeeckx. There are also small but significant collections of philosophy, Patristic material and mysticism.

The collection is comprised of approximately 6,500 monographs of which approx. 1,000 are Carmelitana. There is a small journal collection of both current and older journal titles. Currently the library subscribes to approximately 10 Carmelite journal titles and 14 theological journal titles.

Access to the Collection

Due to staffing and budgetary constraints the library is not generally open to the public. However occasional use by scholars, theological students and those with an interest in Carmelite spirituality can be arranged by appointment. The library is staffed on Tuesdays 10a.m. - 6p.m. Journals may not be borrowed, photocopying facilities are available for a nominal fee.

Bibliographic access is by card catalogue (now closed) and by electronic catalogue. Approximately 2,900 books are available on the electronic catalogue.

Mount Carmel Priory Library

Profile of the Library

The Mount Carmel Priory Library, Varroville, is a library of the Australian Regional Vicariate of the Discalced Carmelite Friars. The Library is privately owned and funded by the Discalced Carmelites. The Library is administered by the Fr. Greg Burke OCD.

The library is primarily for the use of the Discalced Carmelite Friars & novices. The collection, therefore, centres on Carmelite spirituality, the writings of St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux and other Carmelite saints.

Among the strengths of the theological collection are the works and critical studies of some major systematic theologians e.g. Karl Rahner and Hans Urs von Balthasar. There are also small but significant collections of philosophy, Patristic material and mysticism.
