Goonellabah Carmel

Carmel of the Child Jesus of Prague and Our Lady of Mt Carmel is situated at Goonellabah. Goonellabah is an Aboriginal name meaning a red flame tree. The Carmel is about ten minutes’ drive from Lismore, in Northern NSW. The northern view from Carmel is of the Night Cap Range, part of the Great Dividing Range.
Last year a cyclone ripped out an enormous Golden Cypress growing near the front fence of the monastery. The tree fell on the fence, damaging it badly. This year we were able to replace the old fence with a four-foot high brick fence across the front of the monastery grounds.
As there are now three Founding Sisters buried in our enclosure cemetery, we decided to make improvements there also. The cemetery is designed in the form of a Cross, with a lovely statue of Our Lady in the centre.
Just before Advent, at a monthly community meeting for all the sisters, we discussed the Advent Season: its deep meaning and some of the practical ways to celebrate the Season. Ideas were discussed, and most of them put into practice. – A really good motion was to honour the “Year of the Rosary” in the way recently suggested by the Holy Father. At our Sunday Advent Wreath Paraliturgy, we said one decade each week in turn, to honour the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, etc. During each Hail Mary, at the Holy Name of Jesus, a little phrase about the Mystery was added. At the end of the decade we sang the Gloria Patri. We concluded with a prayer asking for the grace of the Mystery. We were all very happy with this addition, and found it helpful for keeping our minds on the Mystery of Advent. Perhaps others may find it helpful, too.
With fond regards from all the Sisters at Goonellabah.
