Christchurch Carmel

Hello from Christchurch Carmel! We haven't got around to writing any inspiring personal stories for this issue (maybe next time) so we thought we would introduce our community in this edition.
There are 14 of us, ranging in age from 29 to 86 years, living in 6 acres of enclosure in a growing area of Christchurch. When founded 70 years ago (our birthday is in February!) it was a rural area, but now a motorway runs along one wall, residential areas have grown up around us and the Heathcote River continues to run along our back wall. Most of our land is given to paddocks (for the cattle and hens), an orchard, gardens and lawn. The homestead which our founding sisters purchased in 1933 still stands and two monastic wings have been added. Our temporary chapel has been extended and extended and now seems to be rather permanent!
We are a mix of jubilarians, expectant jubilarians (Sr Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee is on February 11), some in the middle, Sr Elisapeta about to make her Solemn Profession (also on February 11), and two others in formation, praise God! There are also some others interested in our life. Apart from our main work of prayer, all of our skills are put to good use producing altar breads, sewing, painting, restoring, computing, caring for the sick and tending gardens and animals. We feel a really vital part of our Diocese, with our Bishop John Cunneen as our chaplain (I'm sure all the friars who have been here agree how blessed we are in having him) and we keep in close contact with our Youth and Seminarians. All in all, the Carmel of Christ the King is a great place in which to live and pray.
