Launceston Carmel

Our Carmel has been greatly blessed during 2002. On February 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation Sister Elizabeth of the Trinity made her first profession of vows for 3 years. Not long after that we had the joy and privilege of welcoming the relics of St. Thérèse to our monastery. The official welcome of the archdiocese was held in our small chapel with our Archbishop the main celebrant. Father Aloysius Rego OCD was here for the few days, a great blessing for us and the people of Launceston. He preached at the Holy Hour held in our chapel that evening after which the reliquary came into the enclosure to our Chapter Room where we kept vigil during the night. The relics went out for the sung Mass at 7.30am and for veneration by the people until they left for other churches in the city, Father Aloysius preaching at two of them.
Soon after Easter, Amanda Hickey from Melbourne entered with us as a postulant. On December 7th she received the Carmelite habit and began her year of novitiate as Sister Mary Amanda of Jesus.
On November 12th Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross made her solemn profession, the first solemn profession here for 18 years, so a day of great joy not only for her but for us all and for our many friends. We were happy to have Father Aloysius here for that and also Father Thomas Kalloor OCD from Indonesia.
Other events in our year centred round the liturgy and main Carmelite Feasts. We were blessed in having visits from our Fathers, Greg Homeming and Paul Maunder for some of these. On these visits they are a great help with our on-going formation, so important for us all, but especially our young sisters.

Sr Mary Stephanie.
