Summer 2003
Welcome to Aspirations
Welcome to the first edition of Aspirations, a newsletter
of Discalced Carmelites in the Australian Region—for the first time, including
the friars and nuns. I was appointed editor of a revived newsletter by the last
chapter, and fresh from the experience of my work with the website, thought a
newsletter that provided a means of communication between all Carmelites in the
region would be a useful and potentially wonderful instrument of sharing.
You will quickly see that Aspirations has two flavours: the
twice-yearly printed edition and the carmelite.com on-line edition. The website,
by its very nature, provides scope for more regular articles, and space is not
as great a constraint. You will notice that you will often be referred to the
website to read the full version of a longer article.
To draw this inaugural edition of our regional newsletter to
a close, above all I want to thank everyone who has contributed so generously
to this work. We all live such busy lives, that to be asked to do another thing,
can be a real imposition. Yet, as you can see from the breadth and depth of sharings
contained in this edition, our sisters and brothers have responded so whole-heartedly
to the task at hand, and at times have opened a window into their soul in the
process. I pray that the stories and sharings in this edition will inspire and
encourage you as much as they have me.
I thank you for making my task as editor that much easier.
A big thank you to those who struggled to meet my inhuman word limit (which will
certainly have to be increased for the next edition) and a still bigger thanks
to those who even managed to make the deadline!
Let us continue to uphold each other in prayer,
Your brother in Carmel,
Richard Healey ocd
